Books for All is essentially about making quality books available to underprivileged children in schools, where there is no library facility. This home-grown initiative is spear headed by Pravin and Kanchan Bhasin and they continue to be the guiding force. Pravin Bhasin is a professional Manager, with over 40 years experience in top Indian MNCs.
The initial idea was simplistic enough – to collect old and unused children’s books lying in homes like ours, where children grow up and grow out of the need for all such reading material. We convert one room into a cheerful library. Infrastructure such as a White Board, Soft Board, basic seating, and table to do artwork is also provided, so that the children could look forward to spend their free time and be encouraged to browse through and read the books.
There is a full-time librarian-cum-caretaker in charge of the centre who help the children to select books and further initiate the process of self-study.
Thus Books for All, which started with being a basic library concept has become a multi-pronged initiative striving to tap the hidden talents of children such as Public Speaking, Art & Craft, Theatre, and singing.
Along with the children, we also have learnt to dream big! We want Books For All to complement the education system, by setting up library-cum-creativity centres in Government/Aided schools across North India. We want to help children to realize their potential and regain their dynamism and seize the opportunities that higher education can open to them.To make all these dreams come true we need to collaborate with State Education Department, with other NGOs and of course seek the active participation and help of education-focused organizations and corporates for financial and material support. Before being a service-providing NGO, we are currently a need-based one, in its infancy aspiring to grow fast!
We need a central warehouse for sorting, coding and further distribution of all material needed for the schools and for the children. We need to organize collection centres for books in offices and Malls in major cities and the transport of all collections to the central warehouse. Last but not the least, an equally fast growing need exists for like-minded and committed volunteers to help take our mission forward!
